About: Hidden away in a secluded valley near Crewkerne in South Somerset, Wytch Wood Camping at Blackmore Farm is opening its gates for the first time in May 2021. Home to the Newman family since 1963, we are excited to share this special place and welcome you and your families as guests to our home.

A short distance from the farm, the camping ground is nestled in the edge of ancient woodland, offering up to 15 tent pitches in a mix of habitats. Choose from a site in the dappled shade of the lofty Beech trees’ vivid lime canopy or pick a spot among the whispering grasses of the wildflower meadow. For those looking for a wilder experience we have two pitches tucked away in old hazel coppice, deeper in the woodland - offering total seclusion and tranquillity. Perfect for a spot of bird watching or star-gazing – but a bit of a longer walk to facilities!

Wytch Wood is fully off grid with no mains services, and we aim to have as little impact on the environment as possible. You’ll be drinking cool, clear spring water (safely filtered of course) from one of the uppermost tributaries of the River Axe. 8 Compost Loos are positioned around the site, and guests can enjoy use of the 3 hot showers and washing up stations. Biodegradable washing up liquid, soaps and shampoos will be supplied along with comprehensive recycling facilities.

Each pitch will be provided with seating, a fire pit and initial supply of firewood. Make new friends in the spacious communal seating areas and fire pits. If you fancy learning a new skill, we make charcoal on site from sustainable coppiced hazel, and guests are welcomed to join in learning this ancient craft, and of course use the end product. We are actively working with the advice of the Woodland Trust on ongoing management and restoration of this beautiful and unique woodland.

The campsite is car-free, with wheelbarrows (what else!) are available to move your gear. We will consider small campervans in the summer when the ground is firm, but please enquire first as we are primarily set up to welcome guests with tents.

No intensive methods are used on the farm which is a mix of grazing land, woodland and some wilder areas offering a varied environment for natural flora and fauna to flourish. You can explore on foot via the several footpaths which cross the farm, and we are developing additional walking trails for exclusive use of guests. Unfortunately because of the proximity to wildlife in the woodland and live stock on the farm, we cannot accept dogs at this time.

Very much a working farm, we run a flock of over 500 breeding ewes, producing high quality lambs for the meat trade. We welcome enquiries from guests for our farm bred lamb. A number of equestrian businesses are also present on the farm including a licensed National Hunt Racing stable. There is always lots to see and tours can be arranged for interested campers. We look forward to meeting you!
